Fairlington UMC is a Reconciling Congregation with open hearts, open minds, and open doors. We proclaim and welcome every person as a beloved child of God regardless of age, race, physical or mental ability, sexual orientation, gender identity, family structure, faith history, or life experience. For more than 75 years we have been building and sustaining relationships with our neighbors, responding to community and standing up for justice.
In 2019 we celebrated our 75th year of ministry at the corner of I-395 and King Street in Alexandria. We believe in building relationships with our neighbors, serving the needs in our community and standing up for justice. Our history is rich with these stories. Like other United Methodists, our mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Our vision is that Fairlington welcomes all to a nurturing faith community that serves God by serving others.
We love the green spaces around our building: a wonderful playground with woods and a native plant area across the street with places to sit and walk. Come and explore our outdoor property anytime!
Create a 21st century campus in West End Alexandria that strengthens ministry and empowers our mission priorities of housing, food security, creation care, immigration.
Fairlington UMC has a Green Covenant, which means that Fairlington commits to care for God's Creation and participate in the healing of creation. Fairlington participates in this through learning and teaching, worship, implementing sustainable practices as a church and individuals, and through mission. Caring for Creation has done this through leading workshops, providing a water fountain with a water bottle refill station, purchasing and using cloth napkins, and creating and caring for native plant areas and gardens around the church.
A Reconciling Congregation is one that adopts a public statement, which can be inclusive of many people, but specifically welcomes individuals regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. FUMC crafted and adopted a reconciling statement on February 10, 2013 that recognizes and reflects the diversity of our congregation, and extends a wide welcome that includes many individuals and groups that may not always feel welcome at church.
